The Pioneer DJ Opus-Quad is a 4-channel all-in-one DJ system with striking aesthetics and huge processing power on-board. The evolved architecture delivers a cutting-edge DJ experience, with a wealth of performance options for DJs prepared to break the mould.
Focus Redefined
While the Opus Quad is a departure from the design styling that we’ve become accustomed to from Pioneer DJ, there is method to this bold radiating design. Having recognised that the majority of XDJ-XZ and RX3 units are sold to professional DJs for use at home, the research and development team decided to create a design that better suited the environment the Quad was likely to be played on.
The hard edges of the current range of DJ products have been softened with curves and angles to deliver an intuitive yet comfortable DJ experience. The information normally provided by the in-jog displays has been shifted into the left and right deck displays. This shift brings the information closer to the central touchscreen. Undoubtedly, this small but simple change has a striking impact on the DJ experience when using the Opus-Quad, as your focus on track selection and waveform information remains in one clearly defined area.
Speaking of focus, the deck selection controls are located next to the Deck Display areas. As the Quad is a four-channel standalone unit, the platters have a customisable light ring that syncs with the deck select button to ensure that you know which deck you’re in control of. While only two waveforms are available for side-by-side comparison in the main view, four deck mixing follows the approach that you mix deck one into two and then three and/or four into these already beat-matched channels – removing the need for a cluttered screen.
Library navigation has also been streamlined for the Opus-Quad thanks to the use of a new joystick/rotary encoder combination. It’s never been easier to find the perfect track thanks to this browsing upgrade. The recognition that professional DJs using the Quad at home would require access to their full digital library demonstrates the careful design choices that have been during the R&D process.
The Art of Sound
To build the ultimate all-in-one DJ system, Pioneer DJ has chosen ESS Technology again to take care of D/A converter duties for the Opus-Quad. The high quality 32-bit DAC used is widely recognized as the gold standard in audio digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) technology. The recently launched DJM-A9 and DJM-V10 mixers both feature ESS digital to analogue converters. In blind sound tests these mixers have been the choice of industry professionals time and again – placing the Opus-Quad in good company.
Raw Processing Power
Continuing the evolution of all-in-one DJ systems, the Opus-Quad utilises a completely new architecture featuring a powerful ARM processor. Historically, the DSP platform favoured by Pioneer DJ had limited upgrade potential. Now – thanks to the huge processing overhead still available within the hardware – the Quad can be updated regularly with new features to ensure it remains at the cutting-edge of the latest developments in the DJ booth.
The expansive capabilities offered by the new platform are clear even at launch. The Opus-Quad can be connected to your network using either a wired or wireless connection. This WIFI capability will soon offer streaming capabilities through a planned future update to the firmware OS. The wireless connectivity doesn’t stop there, the Quad also has Bluetooth connectivity to provide an additional input source should a guest at your party need it.
Enhanced connectivity
In addition to the data connectivity options, which include the usual USB connections for Rekordbox prepared libraries as well as MAC or PC computers, the Quad has all the input and output connectivity you need. There are switchable (more on this in a moment) Line/Phono RCA connections as well as inputs for two microphones. Outputs are covered by balanced master and booth outputs as expected, but for those occasions where you need to feed audio to another area other than the main dancefloor, the Zone output, first seen on the DJM-5000, makes a return.
Playability Evolved
The Opus-Quad has been conceived to evolve the playability of Pioneer DJ’s all-in-one product range. The large central touchscreen provides input selection options with track data in one view and, with a swift switch, provides an easy-to-use XY pad for FX control. Combine this with four deck playback, and your creativity can take your DJ set anywhere.
As with every new addition to the Pioneer DJ line-up, there is always the inclusion of new FX and the Opus Quad is no exception. Smooth Echo auto triggers dependent on mixer and deck operation, enabling one handed reverb fade outs. As with previous products, each channel has Sound Color FX, allowing you to combine FX to create unique transitions and deeper layers of interest to your sound.
Further boosting the playability options, the new Smart Cue feature allows you to automatically overwrite the current cue position with recalled Hot Cues. This playability enhancement reduces the steps required to manipulate your Hot Cues with one touch. Loop length is now controlled with a rotary encoder, making changes between time divisions far easier. Full-size jogwheels tailored for comfort round out the performance and playability enhancements.
