The Rane Twelve MKii is a 12-inch motorised turntable controller for Serato DJ, Traktor and Virtual DJ. Designed to deliver all of the benefits of digital while maintaining the “feel” of vinyl performance – the MKii builds on the success of the original Twelve adding new features at the request of DJs from all over the globe.

Motorised platters are nothing new when it comes to DJ controllers. But with the original Twelve, Rane DJ created a performance tool that was so good it even became a piece of permitted kit in the DMC World championships. What sets the Twelve MKii and its predecessor apart from the crowd is the “feel” that it delivers. This is a mixing experience now even closer to the Technics SL1200/1210MK2, thanks to the inclusion of the new “plunger style” start/stop button.

Rane have stuck to the winning format with the Twelve MKii. The high resolution 12-inch motorised platter gives 3,600 ticks of precision control for each single revolution. The deck can now be used in both USB MIDI mode as before and all new DVS mode. DVS mode allows DJs to connect the deck using RCA cables to a compatible mixer or interface and use timecode, rather than MIDI control, for track manipulation. While in DVS mode the deck still gives access to the new track navigation controls and instant doubles etc using MIDI control in a hybrid mode that delivers the best of both worlds.

The new OLED screen gives clear visual feedback for different information, including BPM and control status (it will show which timecode source you have selected for DVS mode, for example). The Rane Twelve MKii delivers the perfect blend of performance familiarity with digital convenience.

The main features of the Rane Twelve MKii include:

  • DVS/USB MIDI Control for Serato DJ Pro, Traktor and Virtual DJ
  • OLED Screen, Control Selection & BPM display
  • Navigation control: Scroll/Load, Back & Instant Doubles
  • New Plunger-style Start/Stop button
  • Full 12-inch motorised platter to control playback
  • Traditional, familiar turntable layout
  • Dual Mode Strip: Track Search and 8 Hot Cue triggers
  • 5.0 kfcm high-torque motor with Hi/Low torque adjust for more traditional setups
  • 4 decks of control so you can use one, two or more
  • Extreme precision - 3600 ticks of platter resolution for seamless performance
  • MIDI interface via USB that can be connected to the SEVENTY-TWO MKII or your computer
  • RCA output for DVS audio signals
  • 33 1/3 and 45 rpm platter speeds
  • 8/16/50% pitch with precise dual resolution slider
  • Top panel rotary and traditional Motor Off switch, allows traditional wind down effects

DVS Mode.

DVS mode is accessed by holding down the DVS Mode button. Once the button starts to flash, you can tap to navigate through the available timecode sources for each DVS platform (currently Serato DJ, Traktor and Virtual DJ). The current source is displayed on the OLED screen, located just beneath the DVS Mode button. When you have cycled to the required option simply wait three seconds to confirm the selection.

You’ll now have the advanced MIDI control for features such as track navigation and instant doubles, while the platter control is now sending audio information in the same way that Phase and standard turntables do. It’s worth remembering that DVS mode will not suffer from any wireless dropouts or problems caused by worn cartridges and styli.

Four decks in one.

You might be wondering how you keep track of where you are when jumping between the different deck options available. Rane DJ have kept this simple by adding visual takeover LEDs. When you jump between the various virtual “decks” using the “Deck Select” buttons, the position of the Twelve MKii’s pitch control might not match the pitch setting for the target “deck” in the software. If you slowly move the fader in the direction indicated by the LED arrow until it turns off, you’ll have matched the pitch in the hardware to the digital equivalent!

Instant Doubles.

There are two ways to use the Instant Doubles feature. First up, the obvious choice is to press the “Instant Doubles” button – this will load the track that’s currently playing into the active deck. Instant Doubles can also achieved using the scroll/load control. If you press the knob twice in quick succession, the same track is loaded to both decks.

Custom control.

Rane have designed the Twelve MKii to provide the perfect performance, whoever is using the deck. To achieve the best possible feel for the individual there are a number of customisation options that can be used to make the deck your own.

The Control Disc supplied with the turntable is a full size 12-inch disc. This controls the audio playhead in your DJ software. To achieve a looser feel, with more spinback, you can place 1-4 of the spacers which are included, over the spindle underneath the slipmat.

You can also customise the Control Disc by replacing it with any piece of vinyl. The replacement disc will need to have three 6mm holes to attach the quick release adapter, the original Control Disc can be used as a reference.

In addition, the Rane Twelve MKii offers high and low torque settings for further customisation of the “feel” – enabling you to get that true vinyl touch!
