Traktor Kontrol X1 MK3 Review

Traktor Kontrol X1 MK3 Review

Native Instruments (NI) need no introduction, founded in 1999 Native originally started life as a software developer with their modular synth package Generator but have since become one of the most recognisable names in music production and DJing for both their software and hardware. NI’s Traktor software is one of the world's most widely used DJ platforms so it came as no surprise when they dropped an upgraded version of much loved X1 MIDI controller in August 2023. The original X1 dropped back in February 2010 and has remained one of most popular portable hardware options available for DJ’s with an extensive list of users, most notably Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox.

The latest iteration of the X1 has been completely redesigned with a fresh new interface, redesigned LED prompt system for visual cues and 5 OLED screens which show important information from the software directly on the unit. In addition to the new user interface the X1 now also includes a powered USB hub which can be used to connect other controllers or hard drives to the computer via a single USB. Although the user interface has been given a complete rehaul the X1 is still remarkably easy to navigate. The transport controls are clearly labelled at the bottom of the unit and also benefit from dual functionality thanks to some carefully considered shift functions.

Above the transport controls users can find a dedicated loop section which is made up of four endless encoders for adjusting loop length ETC and two screens which show time elapsed and time remaining, a progress bar, currently selected deck, and loop length for each track respectively. The unit also features a set of 8 distinct knobs with corresponding kill buttons which can be used to control a range of software functions. The primary use of this section is to control the range of FX in Traktor but these knobs/kill buttons can also be used to control the mixer section of the software, this was a popular application for users of the MK2 device but this previously required manual MIDI mapping so it's nice to see that NI have been listening to their users by building this functionality directly into the unit.

On testing we really enjoyed the new layout of the X1 along with some of the new features. The mixer function is a particularly nice addition to the already much loved MK2 model and is a feature that we think will prove popular amongst mobile DJ’s looking for a potential backup unit. We also really liked the new LED system for visual feedback and think this could be particularly useful when using the unit in dark and dingy club environments. The X1 MK3 is a great update from Native that picks up right where the MK2 controllers left off so we hope to see updates to the rest of the Traktor Kontrol range at some point in the near future. The X1 MK3 is now available and includes a license for the all new Traktor Pro 4 in the box!
